Via Ferrata: Italian for “iron way”, Via Ferrata originated in the Italian Dolomites as a way to move soldiers easily across difficult terrain during the war. In 2005, Whistler Alpine Guides Bureau established the first Via Ferrata in North America, located on the north side of Whistler Peak. Designed for anybody of reasonable fitness level, it combines a trek over one of Whistler’s ancient glaciers and an 800 vertical feet rock climb assisted by carabineers and iron ladder rungs fastened to the rock face. Via Ferrata includes a four-hour excursion to the summit of Whistler Peak, guaranteed to break a sweat and provide unlimited views.
