Partake in refreshing Pink Martini with a delicate twist: Lucy Woodward

June 27th, 2011 by Patti Mangan

Pink Martini is back in town! For those of you happily soaked in the 60′s sound groove this collaborative 12 piece band goes down oh so smoothly while taking you around the world.

“At one moment, you feel like you’re in the middle of a samba parade in Rio de Janeiro, and in the next moment, you’re in a French music hall of the 1930s or a palazzo in Napoli. It’s a bit like an urban musical travelogue. We’re very much an American band, but we spend a lot of time abroad … and therefore have the incredible diplomatic opportunity to represent – through our repertoire and our concerts – a broader, more inclusive America…”

But here is the twist!

Vocalist Lucy Woodward will replace China Forbes in Pink Martini’s Northern California performances with the San Francisco Symphony at Davies Symphony Hall June 30 and July 1 and at Flint Center in Cupertino July 2. Forbes has withdrawn from the concerts on the advice of her physician, and must take an extended leave of absence from the band to undergo surgery on her vocal cords.

Born in London and raised in New York City, Lucy Woodward’s 2003 debut album led to an international tour and significant press exposure, including a spot on “The Tonight Show.” An award-winning songwriter, Woodward has written and recorded songs for several film soundtracks, including most recently the Golden Globe-winning The Blind Side. Lucy’s second album, Lucy Woodward Is…Hot & Bothered garnered high praise from critics. USA Today called it “a steamy, string-kissed slice of retro British pop by a versatile singer/songwriter.” “Lucy’s a ball, equally appreciable for fans of melodic sing-along baubles and highbrow aficionados of finely honed musical composition.

NPR White House correspondent Ari Shapiro, who sings and records with Pink Martini, will also perform with the band at each of the three Bay Area concerts.

Ticket exchanges, donations, or requests for refunds or gift certificates may be made through the San Francisco Symphony Patron Services Office by calling 415-864-6000 Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from noon to 6 p.m.

Thursday, June 30 at 8 p.m. Davies Symphony Hall
Friday, July 1 at 8 p.m. 201 Van Ness Ave., San Francisco

Saturday, July 2 at 8 p.m.** **Flint Center, 21250 Stevens Creek Boulevard, Cupertino

TICKETS: Davies Symphony Hall concerts $20-$115; Flint Center concert $15-$75. Tickets available at sfsymphony.org, by phone at 415-864-6000, and at the Davies Symphony Hall Box Office, on Grove Street between Van Ness Avenue and Franklin Street in San Francisco.

Gertrude Stein at the Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco

June 24th, 2011 by Lynn Friedman

When someone commented that Gertrude Stein did not look like her portrait, Picasso replied, “She will.” Thanks to the CJM, I am able to guarantee you will receive buckets of admiration for Stein and her contemporaries.
In her time (1874-1946) Stein was famous as a modern writer, style-maker, art collector, and networker extraordinaire.

What’s well known about Gertrude Stein is her quotable phrases like “There is no there there”, bringing together creatives such as Picasso, Matisse and Hemingway, and hosting the LGBT elite of her time.
Hats off to the Contemporary Jewish Museum whose shows never disappoint. They can take any artist and present a visual story that always fascinates with insider profiles and a revelation or two. Actually five here.

Story One, Picturing Gertrude:
Your first introduction to Stein is a well researched story in text and art of her childhood to maturity. She grew up in Oakland, CA. We watch her appearance change over the decades from the popular fashion of high necks, full sleeves, and wasp waists into the imposing masculine figure of her maturity. We learn of her middle class roots and her travels to Paris with her brothers and sister-in-law to begin their extensive art collecting life style. The title wall presents vintage footage of Stein in her Bilignin, France home. There is video projection of Stein with music by Virgil Thomson, a friend and collaborator.

Story Two, Domestic Stein:
Enter Alice B. Toklas, a tourist from San Francisco who met Gertrude in Paris and never left. I’d love to know the story of the woman who was traveling with Alice who saw the writing on the wall and went back home. Gertrude and Alice set up housekeeping, with Alice playing the traditional wife role, providing Stein with an eccentric yet traditional domestic life. Toklas was an efficient personal assistant and administrator of Gertrude Steins public persona. Steins “The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas”, created an equally memorable character of Toklas.
The woman from Oakland, California reinvented herself into The Great Gertrude Stein, Parisian Salonnière of wide repute.

Story Three, The Art of Friendship:
If you’ve seen Kathy Bates portraying Stein in Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris”, you will be blown away by the actual recording of Gertrude’s voice. Trust me, it’s not what you would expect. I was left with the impression that Stein is more approachable in biography than in her prose.
As to the mostly gay set of international men of the arts, Stein became a sort of mother figure.
Most people don’t realize that Stein also wrote opera and produced ballet.
Gertrude introduced the much younger Picasso to Matisse. When Matisse opened a painting school Alice took a class from him. Picasso created the portrait of Stein that became the only painting she donated to a museum. Especially in later years her primary focus was always insuring her legacy.

Story 4, Celebrity Stein:
In 1934, at the height of their fame, Stein and Toklas embarked on a seven month literary tour of the United States. Stein played to sold out auditoriums, and as one commentator said they cruised through their American tour like a battleship and a destroyer. They were truly on par with today’s sports heroes and pop stars. Stein’s opera ” Four Saints in Three Acts” was a hit on Broadway.

Story 5, Legacies:
It’s surmised that Stein retained her fame long after death due to her diversity of interests. In her time she was a renowned writer and speaker, while today she is probably most admired for her proud gay lifestyle and incredible contributions to the art world.

Santiago’s Secret Hideaway – The Aubrey

June 22nd, 2011 by Sheila

Santiago, Chile’s largest and capital city, is an eclectic mix of old and new world culture. Founded in 1541 by the Spanish, Santiago shares a rich history with many other South American cities, yet it distinguishes itself as the ultimate urban destination of diversity – in geography, climate and attitude.

History is still very much alive throughout Santiago. Beautifully preserved historic government buildings, museums, churches and countless plazas and parks dominate most of the city public areas. Santiago is expansive…made up of countless neighborhoods or barrios – each with its own distinctive character and appeal. To keep you on track, a good map is a necessity. But to maximize your time in Santiago, I highly recommend hiring an experienced guide to show you the highlights.

With the beautiful Andean Mountains as its backdrop and the Pacific Ocean under two hours away, Santiago is truly blessed. Its prime geographic location makes Santiago the ultimate ‘gateway city” offering a visitor easy access to the best of Chile.

Fast Fact: Santiago was named the #1 Destination to visit for 2011 by the New York Times.

From world-class skiing, mountain trekking, wine country excursions, beach getaways, culinary farm stays, and unparalleled outdoor adventures – the opportunities for creating unforgettable memories are limitless.

For an in-city colorful unique experience, the Bellavista Barrio is your place.

Santiago’s beloved bohemian quarter, Bellavista, is the heart of a thriving arts community and the epicenter of nightlife and dining. Often compared to Paris’s Montmartre and Marais districts, Bellavista is the core of innovative design and artistic energy. Visual and culinary distractions run rampant here. It would take no less than a week to uncover Bellavista’s favorites & fabulous finds.

A fully authentic Santiago experience requires immersing oneself in the local flavor and history. That experience begins with your hotel choice. Finding a hotel that is centrally located and excels in superior comfort and service is never an easy task…but I was lucky to find Santiago’s best kept secret in the heart of Bellavista.

The Aubrey, an elegantly renovated colonial mansion, is an escape from the ordinary.

This intimate luxury boutique property, nestled at the foot of Santiago’s San Cristobal Hill and Metropolitan Park, has been on the “hot list” since it opened in March 2010.

The owners have masterfully taken a tired property and created a modern and sophisticated private retreat that is a trendsetter from its decor to its heated outdoor pool terrace. The Aubrey’s architectural and design philosophy is evident upon arrival – a creative mix of casual elegance and imaginative historic preservation.

Built in 1927, as the home of one of Chile’s most influential politicians and business leaders, the mansion has always been in the spotlight. When converted into a hotel, the property was expanded by securing the stately home next door, which was built in the same year by the same architect.

Today, the Aubrey welcomes discerning guests to an oasis of classic comfort and style.

The hotel’s 15 rooms are charmingly unique. My room, on the second floor level, was bright and spacious with a double balcony overlooking the nearby park. Guests have several options available, but one may prefer a suite facing the back courtyard to avoid the potential street noise on the weekends.

The common salon areas are tastefully decorated with antiques and unusual design pieces offering an inviting and cozy ambience; the oversized chairs, sofa and soft lighting are special touches make the Aubrey feel like home.

The Aubrey’s attentive bi-lingual staff works wonders daily to meet your every need from booking tours and transportation to providing insider tips on local restaurants, shopping and nearby attractions. Unlike the big franchise hotels, the staff-to-guest ratio is nearly 1:1, so expect to be pleasantly pampered throughout your stay.

The Aubrey’s storied past and present-day commitment to excellence promises to deliver a sensational Santiago sojourn too perfect not to share.

A Magical Maritime Escape – Norfolk, Virginia

June 20th, 2011 by Sheila

When one thinks of Viriginia, places like Williamsburg, Richmond or Alexandria come to mind. But less than two hours from Interstate 95, you will discover one of the nation’s oldest and culturally vibrant destinations – the historic seaport city of Norfolk, Virginia.

This beautiful waterfront community has changed a great deal over the last 400 years, but its welcoming charm and distinctive character remain intact.

Norfolk’s unique geographic location surrounded by water on nearly every side – the Chesapeake Bay, the Atlantic Ocean and the Elizabeth River – has been key to its claim to fame and strong economic growth. As an active port, Norfolk has always been an important commerce center and a strategic military outpost. Today, it is the home of the largest naval base in the United States if not the world. For an up close view of the base’s resident fleet of aircraft carriers, destroyers, and submarines, you will want to opt for a formal tour. Escorted tours are readily available by bus or boat. But the best vantage point is on the water. The Victory Rover, with seating for up to 150, offers an excellent 2 hour harbor cruise that captures all of the highlights.

A visit to the Battleship Wisconsin is a must. The honorable U.S. warship, affectionately known as “Wisky”, is now permanently docked at Norfolk’s harbor and offers daily tours. Whether you are a history buff or not, exploring the depths of a monolithic 45,000 ton, 880 foot ship is an extraordinary adventure. If you are lucky, you may even get a chance to sit in the “hot seat” of the command center and engage in a combat auditory simulation. That beats a Disney ride any day! (warning: ship tours are not for the claustrophobic). Right next door, you will find Nauticus, Norfolk’s acclaimed maritime science museum and favorite family attraction. Nauticus features a 2,000 gallon touch tank of regional marine life, interactive hands-on exhibits, a multi-media and screening theatre, as well as an extensive collection of war artifacts.

Norfolk’s unique tourist appeal reaches beyond its rich maritime and military history. The city has a little something for everyone. You will find museums, theatres, performing arts, galleries, shopping and endless culinary delights. Immerse yourself in art at Norfolk’s pride and joy - the nationally renowned Chrysler Museum of Art. The stunning Italianate-style structure is incredible inside and out. The museum houses an impressive collection of masterpieces – nearly 35,000 treasures showcased in 60 galleries. You will not want to miss the exquisite Tiffany glass on display…said to be one of the most comprehensive collections in the world. Head north …just a few miles from the city center and museum for stroll through the lovely and trendy GHENT neighborhood. Here you will find tree-lined streets, stately historic homes, unique shops, sidewalk cafes and lots of local flavor. The Green Onion Restaurant’s front patio on Colley Avenue is the perfect spot for a hearty lunch and great people-watching. The menu is fun and fresh. The Green Onion’s Cheddar, Apple and Bacon speciality sandwich is my favorite-absolutely divine! For a late afternoon pick me up — pop over to the Historic Freemason District, a revitalized urban neighborhood with original architecture and narrow streets reminiscent of Old Town Alexandria but on a much smaller scale. Enjoy a latte or a pint of ale at CURE, a friendly coffeehouse and cafe. Need to nosh…try the ultimate cure - ”the combo” – pastrami, turkey, swiss, coleslaw and russian dressing on rye…and don’t forget a helping of CURE’s famous homemade potato salad.

Walk off the calories visiting the area’s many historic sites. Recommended stops include the Freemason Street Baptist Church, a beautiful Gothic Revival-style church designed by noted architect Thomas U. Walter and recognized as Norfolk’s tallest building during in its day (1850-1879). And, for a glimpse at post-revolutionary period lifestyles, explore the Willoughby-Baylor House and the Moses Myers House,well-preserved examples of Norfolk’s first brick Federal style townhomes. Both homes are now museums open to the public.

Return to Town Point Park for a magical sunset that lights up the sky and paints the mirrored water. Mix it up before dinner. Take in a play at the Little Theatre of Norfolk , the oldest continually operating community theatre on the East Coast or opt for a concert at Chrysler Hall. Follow the fun and entertainment with late night dining at fashionable PRESS 626 Cafe & Wine Bar in Ghent known for its tasty tapas, salads and farm fresh fare.

Close the evening with a nightcap and dessert at BARDO, a favorite local haunt with a soothing vibe and a romantic ambiance, offering a full bar menu of exotic elixirs. Cocktails with names like Kim-Chee, Dharmata and Ginger Bling Bling are sure to help you reach nirvana before the night is over.

Norfolk’s free-spirited attitude is celebrated daily. In fact, over 130 whimsical sea siren statues are sprinkled throughout the city. These colorful mermaids, designed and created by local artists, are symbols of Norfolk’s passion for the arts and the city’s commitment to keeping the region’s natural resources protected.

Before your final farewell, a slight detour is in order as you leave Norfolk’s downtown center. Stop for a few hours of peaceful repose amidst the azaleas and lush greenery of the 155 acre Norfolk Botanical Garden, located off Interstate 64 just minutes outside the city limits.

Norfolk will enchant and enlighten you as it did its founding fathers centuries before… leaving you longing for that instant replay button where every cherished memory of your coastal adventure is reborn in the moment to inspire and share for years to come.

When to Go: Spring to late Fall.

The Inside Track – more not to be missed activities & attractions:

  • Enjoy breakfast ” All Day” at Norfolk’s favorite hangout – D’Egg’s Diner on Main Street
  • Indulge in a taste of confectionary history with an ice cream cone from the legendary Doumar’s where the sweet treat was first invented.
  • Pamper the body with a mid-morning blissful beauty escape to SMOOTH where owner/ masseuse, Nickie will erase all your worries and loosen tight muscles leaving you relaxed and renewed.
  • Enjoy guilt-free retail therapy with visit to Firefly, an absolutely fabulous find. Retro, vintage, modern and antique furnishings, accents and attire at affordable prices.
  • Charter a boat from SailTime to explore the waterways or tune up your captain skills with a SailTime weekend training course.
  • Savor a organic brew at Elliot’s Fair Grounds after discovering Textures, the delightfully quirky gift shop next door.
  • Visit the General Douglas MacArthur Memorial museum in Norfolk’s restored 1850 City Hall, where the celebrated war hero and his wife are buried
  • A sunset sail or moonlight cruise on the Victory Rover’s sister ship, the majestic American Rover, a 19th Century inspired schooner.
  • Book a Cruise. Norfolk’s Half Moone Cruise & Celebration Center hosts cruises almost every month, welcoming more than 230,000 passengers since it opened in April, 2007. Check out Carnival Cruises for the 2011-2012 sailings.
  • Hunt for antique treasures on Granby Street.
  • Catch a flick at the NARO, an independent film house located in Ghent.

World Class Waterfront Destination – The Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center – National Harbor, Maryland

June 10th, 2011 by Sheila

The Gaylord Company, now four properties strong, has once again outdone itself with the spectacular Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in the heart of our nation’s power center on the shores of the majestic Potomac River.

Location, Location, Location…is the distinguishing feature of this three year young waterfront oasis.

The convergence of the Mid-Atlantic’s key geographic areas – Maryland, D.C. and Virginia give the resort destination a unique flavor and a colorful dynamic. Visitors follow no set profile and are as diverse and international as can be expected from any capital city. Gaylord National’s Convention Center, offering over 470,000 square feet of function space, is a huge draw for corporate meetings and conferences with clients represented from around the globe. Consequently, there is always something happening 24/7.

The Gaylord National delivers a high level of service, amenities and easy access to local attractions that consistently exceed expectations! In a competitive market that caters to government contractors, dignitaries and industry leaders, the Gaylord National is top contender.

The Gaylord National Resort is the largest combined hotel and convention center on the East Coast; yet, despite its size it has succeeded in maintaining a level of intimacy that keeps customer satisfaction and retention high. As a guest it is difficult not to feel energized, excited and impressed when exploring this distinctive hotel complex.

From top to bottom, it is extraordinary!

One could easily compare it to a cruise ship permanently docked where everything you could possibly need is within reach. The property has broad appeal – from business to family fun. Reunions, weddings, family outings and meetings are part of the mix. Moreover given National Harbor’s proximity to Washington – only 15 minutes by car, there is often a bit of mystery or political intrigue in the air; guests cannot be certain that a innocent handshake over lunch at a nearby table was not a world changing event. The region’s business centers, historic landmarks, museums, and top attractions are just a shuttle or water taxi away, making the Gaylord National the perfect home base for business and pleasure.

National Harbor in itself can easily be considered small coastal city spanning 300 acres, where you will find a plentitude of restaurants, retail shops and entertainment venues. First-timers are always surprised by the expansive layout and pedestrian friendly walkways. The picturesque marina dotted with benches encourages visitors to relax and unwind. Visitors gravitate toward the water to sit and savor the striking city views from every corner. Gaylord National’s outdoor colonial garden home to more than 40,000 flowering plants and its lush riverfront great lawn lined with 1200 oak, cherry and chestnut trees are popular afternoon haunts. When the sun goes down, guests are invited to enjoy a spectacular indoor performance; the atrium fountain comes alive with music, bright lights and water geysers reaching up to 50 feet in the air. Inside and out…the Gaylord National will not disappoint.

Every moment is an unforgettable memory in the making!

Imagine…waking up to a dramatic view of the Washington Monument, enjoying a sunset boat cruise along the Potomac or catching all the action at a Washington Nationals baseball game…and never having to get into a car!

When immersed in the unparalleled scenery, serenity…and simple pleasures that are innate to the overall Gaylord National experience, it is easy to forget that you are moments from a bustling urban metropolis…and oh so very hard to remember that this is sadly just a happy break from reality…and that you will eventually have to leave. But not to worry…The Gaylord National will give you countless reasons for a return.

Product Review: Beautiful in the BLINC of an Eye

June 9th, 2011 by Sheila

During a recent visit to the Gaylord National Harbor resort property just outside the nation’s capital, I discovered an incredibly innovative beauty line - Blinc Cosmetics. The resort’s Relâche Spa team raved about Blinc’s magical makeover powers; the line’s revolutionary core technology and stellar testimonials have made Blinc a coveted choice of women in search of pure glamour and a much-needed lift for tired worn eyes. Blinc is the marriage of science and sensational style – producing a superior and safe product mix that offers the ultimate in all-day performance. With every application, Blinc delivers a flattering flawless look! And, the transformation is 100% pain free, without the help of a cosmetic surgeon.

The mascara,a global top seller, utilizes a special copolymer ingredient -a mild plastic- that gently forms tiny water resistant tubes around each lash creating a lengthening and volumizing effect. Unlike other mainstream mascaras that rely on harsh oil based ingredients, Blinc’s focus is on protecting the fragile eye area. Colors range from Black to Dark Purple.

Core Benefit: Long lasting color that is smudge, clump and flake proof. And, no worries …should you shed a tear or rub your eyes…it is remarkably resilient.

No drips, streaks or dreaded raccoon eyes!

Have I mentioned…I love this line!

You will want one of everything for your makeup kit.

A close contender to Blinc’s mascara is its enhancing eyebrow mousse in 6 shades – Light Blonde to Black.

The mousse fills in sparse areas of the brow perfectly as it moisturizes and protects the skin for a face-framing finish that will last into the late evening. One gentle touch of the wand is all that it takes…and presto! No clumps…no mess. The little grey brow hairs disappear and you are dramatically ten years younger.

For this maturing gal and anti-aging advocate… I say “enough said” – just show me the” BLINC”… I am ready to buy!

Products: Mascara to Eye Shadow (formerly packaged under ” Kiss Me” Cosmetics)

Suggested Retail: $25 (each product)

Available in over 10,000 Spas, Salons and Beauty Boutiques worldwide.

For more information, visit the Blinc Consumer Website or Call 1-877-454-7763.
