The 54th San Francisco International Film Festival is in full swing at some of the finest venues in the city from April 25 – May 5. This year SFIFF presents almost 200 films for an expected crowd of over 75,000. If you can’t make the Festival in person, make a note on your calendar of the release date and/or ready your NetFlix queue.
If I had to pick a theme this year, I would say it is compassion. SFIFF allows us the privilege of an intimate education in the emotional and physical lives of people we would most likely never have an opportunity to meet.
Beginners, the Opening Night selection will surely become a must-see for everyone. This comedy-drama was written as a love story by Mike Mills to his father Paul. Paul Mills, expertly played by Christopher Plummer, was once the Director of the Oakland Museum of Art. He led an artsy life raising three children with his wife Jan. The story finds him widowed at age 75 grappling with a sense of urgency as he has been diagnosed with lung cancer and has decided to come out of the closet and live the gay life style to the fullest.
All i’m going to say is, after the credits, I witnessed a man loudly weeping, unable to leave his seat. Beginners opens in theaters June 2, 2011.
The Black Power Mix Tape 1967 – 1975 is a fascinating documentary consisting of present day interviews mixed with 30 year old archival footage shot by a Swedish team and never seen in the US. This chronicle of the Black Power movement in the United States from 1967 to 1975 gives us the cultural and political back story from the point of view of prominent African Americans. The original music is by Questlove and Om’Mas Keith. While this is serious stuff, there are a few unintentionally amusing bits thanks to the curiousity and naive eyes of Swedish journalists. TV Guide, that’s all i’m going to say. Much of the story takes place in the San Francisco Bay Area and includes amazing moments with Stokely Carmichael, Angela Davis, Huey P. Newton, Eldridge Cleaver and Bobby Seale. Local actor Danny Glover is co-producer.
Silent Souls introduces us to the Volga region of Russia where we meet the Merja people of Finno-Urgric origins. A pulp factory CEO’s wife dies and thus begins the dream like road trip of Aist and his photographer friend Vesa. Their plan is to say their final goodbyes in traditional Merja style on a beach with sentimental significance to Aist. Along the way we learn about the two pal’s complicated relationship and the poetic rituals that bind them. Not to break the mood but I didn’t know there were so many uses for vodka.
Live, Above All revolves around Chanda, a South African girl of about nine struggling to make it to adulthood intact. Her inner strength is evident as she marches through every obstacle in a social worker’s handbook. Chandra cannot count on her ill mother or her drunk father to help her stay in school and keep the two youngest sibblings together, all the while mourning the loss of her newborn sister. As if that wasn’t enough, the poverty and lack of education are starkly displayed by the townsfolk, ill equipped to deal with the spector of AIDS destroying their community. Chandra shows superhuman resolve and resilience, giving the viewer much needed hope for the future.
WAR: Women, Art, Revolution by San Francisco Artist & Filmmaker Lynn Hershman Leeson, is both a history lesson and a call to arms. Think about it. Can you name three famous women artists? Nobody interviewed on the street or even in two major art museums could. That’s the very same point the Gorilla Girls have made for years with their many protests outside international museums while in gorilla masks. In the 1970′s congress actually debated the merits of Judy Chicago’s images of women’s genitalia in her The Dinner Party.
Sidebar: thirty years later Judy Orlando reverses the gaze withThe Supper Party, paying homage to men’s private parts. Watch this space to see how this traveling show is greeted around the country.

Optional extension for Antiques Fair, October 1 – 2
Join author Laura Deutsch for a week of writing and traveling in Italy’s jewel, Tuscany.
“We’ll be based in the beautiful, medieval town of Arezzo, home to exquisite Renaissance frescoes and other art treasures. Exploring the softly rolling countryside with vineyards, olive groves, and deep green cypress trees, we’ll visit charming nearby cities and towns. Arezzo’s famous antique fair will take place the weekend after our retreat and you’re welcome to extend your stay if you’d like to attend.
Find your own rhythm and become part of Arezzo’s daily life. Stroll down the Corso Italia, where the locals take their evening passeggiata. Window shop, people watch, stop in the handmade pasta market, relax at a sidewalk café with an espresso or glass of wine. The pace is slow, the people warm and friendly. Life is sweet, la dolce vita.
Most days, we’ll have a morning class in Arezzo and an afternoon excursion. Our visits to local markets, medieval towns, and Renaissance art will provide great material for writers of all genres and offer a rare opportunity for those who would like to write memoir, travel, food, art or history. We’re staying in lovely studio apartments, each with private bath and kitchen, owned by a delightful Italian family. The workshop includes classes, side trips, and time to write. This will be a memorable experience.
We’re going green! For our day trips, we’ll take trains, which are convenient, easy and fun.”
The trip includes:

Poppi, where we’ll visit the castle and take in the glorious countryside.
Arezzo is in the heart of Tuscany and Umbria, 40 – 75 minutes from Florence (depending on which train you take) and 2 – 2.5 hours from Rome.
You’ll have a day at leisure, when you may visit Florence (40 minutes on the fast train) or Siena (1 hour by bus).

Just a short drive from Orlando, nestled within an orange grove and acres of farmland, you will discover a whimsical structure dressed in pastel pink with touches of bright blue, green and yellow. No, you are no longer in Disney World. This fairytale-like property is the home to the Chalet Suzanne Restaurant and Country Inn, a favorite of locals and visitors for over 80 years. Chalet Suzanne offers a true Old Florida experience.
The Inn’s 26 eclectic rooms feature antiques and vintage decor. Each has a private bath and all the comforts of home – a television, phone, air conditioning and Wi-Fi service.
Guests will delight in the beautiful gardens, pool and the lake which is a haven for hundreds of turtles.
Third generation owners, Eric and Dee Hinshaw are committed to making each visit a memorable and magical occasion. From the complimentary decanter of sherry in each room to the original family recipes served in the restaurant, the charm and authenticity of Chalet Suzanne make a lasting impression.
Chalet Suzanne has a history as colorful as its walls.
This one time farm house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Chalet Suzanne’s existence is the result of good and bad times. In the early 1920′s, Florida was booming. The state was a destination for those wanting to escape the cold and brutal winters of the North and Midwest. Carl and Bertha Hinshaw saw opportunity. They settled in Central Florida and began work on a plan to build a large community of vacation homes. But, the timing was off. The Great Depression and the untimely death of Carl changed the course for the family. Bertha, determined to provide for herself and her two small children, channeled her passion for entertaining and forged a career in hospitality. Her perseverance paid off. Chalet Suzanne, named after her daughter, was born. The Inn’s reputation for fine food, deluxe accommodations and warm hospitality spread fast. Celebrities, politicians, and leaders of industry were frequent guests. Chalet Suzanne’s popularity grew to such a level that an airstrip was added to handle the influx of private jets.
The Hinshaw success story continued into the late 50′s. Bertha’s son, Carl Hinshaw Jr. refined and reinvented his mom’s treasured soup recipes into a thriving soup manufacturing company. The Hinshaw soups have received countless awards over the years. But the greatest recognition was the honor bestowed by NASA. The soup nourished the astronauts of Apollo 15 on their mission to the moon in 1973. Since that time, the soup -repackaged as Moon Soup – has been welcomed in kitchens around the world. You can pick up a few cans in the restaurant or gift shop during a visit or the Hinshaws will gladly ship you a case upon request.
A visit to Chalet Suzanne would not be complete without dinner. This is no ordinary meal. Plan on 2-3 hours of pure indulgence!
The menu features a 5 course prix fixe dinner ($60+ per person) which includes many of the Hinshaw family classics like the Chalet Grapefruit – a caramelized grapefruit with organic chicken livers, the world famous Romaine “Moon” Soup, and Chicken Suzanne – half of a chicken basted with a special chicken veloute sauce. A grilled Buffalo Ribeye, savory seafood dishes and Duck Confit a l’Orange are also among the entree choices.
Complement the meal with a selection from the Chalet’s extensive world class wine list or enjoy a cocktail from the full service bar. End the evening with decadent dessert. Chalet Suzanne’s signature Orange Aspic Pound Cake drizzled in creamsicle icing is heavenly – well worth the extra calories. For a complete menu and hours of operation, visit the Dining page of the Inn’s website.

The final lesson in our sushi-making class at Nombe (a hip izakaya in the heart of the Mission) was when chef/co-owner, Mari Takahashi, tried to teach us to say ”itadakimas” which is “Bon Appétit “in Japanese. After repeated attempts she took pity on us and said with a little giggle, “Pretend you are at Disneyland and say ” eat a ducky mouse” and it will sound close enough.”
Looks aside, my sushi tasted absolutely delish! For a fun-filled two hours, Mari taught about 20 of us some serious sushi-making skills. She first warned that in Japan it took years to become a full-fledged sushi master (who had probably spent a whole year just mopping up before he’d even be allowed to touch the rice-and then it would be just to wash it until the water ran clear).
Class is in session
“In Japan, sushi chefs are very pale because they work inside for such long hours,” Mari explained, as she gently tossed the rice in the sushi-oke, a gigantic wooden bowl used to soak up extra moisture from the rice. This is a very important step since the faster you dry the rice, the shinier it gets. She then showed us how to make hosomaki, futomaki, and uramaki , an inside-out roll, which she said, “was created in America because lots of people here think it’s gross to see the black seaweed wrapper.”
We went to our individual stations which had been set up with a sushi mat, knife, rice, avocado, cucumber, fish and other ingredients and got ready to rock and roll. Surprisingly, the deceivingly simple-looking nigiri (hand-formed sushi) were the hardest to make, while rolling a uramaki, was almost idiot-proof.
Before sitting down to enjoy the fruits of my labor, I asked Nombe partner /sake sommelier/and Mari’s genial hubby, Gil Payne, if he would choose a nice sake for me from the 75+ premium sake that are currently on the menu. He selected a lovely, silken sake he calls “Bamboo Rain”, (which is being private-labeled specially for Nombe) that paired beautifully with my misshapen hand-rolls.
Some of my feeb but tasty results
Luckily, I had brought a very large container for leftovers, which made an impressive dinner for two that night.
Nombe Restaurant also offers ongoing classes in traditional Japanese cooking as well as sushi classes. The next Japanese cooking class is scheduled for Saturday, May 7th from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cost of the class is $60 for singles and $100 a couple. Call to reserve your space. Nombe, 2491 Mission St. (at 21st St.); 415-681-7150 or nombesf.com
