LAX - Leave your bags early!

May 15th, 2007 by Patti

If you’re on your way out of Los Angeles via LAX on a domestic flight, you can check in your bags before you get there at a handful of spots around town: the Van Nuys FlyAway Bus Terminal, Los Angeles Convention Center, Union Station FlyAway, and the Port of Los Angeles Cruise Ship Terminal. It’s called remote airline and baggage check-in. Your baggage will go through normal inspection, receive tags and you’ll receive your boarding pass. The service is courtesy of a collaboration between LAX, certain airlines at LAX, the Transportation Security Administration, and Baggage Airline Guest Services, Inc. It’s one less thing to worry about and one less airport line to stand in.

I was hanging out with the impeccably dressed, and oh so funny crew from jetBlue last night and they told me about this great promotion they are doing in San Francisco to celebrate their new SFO hub. THEY ARE GIVING AWAY FREE TICKETS!! Yes, 150 of them on Saturday morning… here is the flyer about the giveaway and, of course, here is a photo of the charming men of jetBlue!!

More Men for Your Perusal!!

May 3rd, 2007 by Stephanie

Here are even more men with healing, photographic and enlightening business pursuits!

1. Phil Borges, photographer, Women Empowered: Inspiring Change in the Emerging World. Renowned international photographer Phil Borges teamed up with humanitarian organization CARE and visited their projects around the world.

He says, "I go into a community where CARE works and ask folks to point me to the most outspoken woman who has done the most to change her community. When I find her, I’m not asking her to look powerful. She does that herself."

With a foreword by Madeleine K. Albright and a portion of the proceeds supporting CARE’s work in poor countries around the world, what a great Mother’s Day gift this gorgeous book makes!

2. Bill George and my neighbor, Peter Sims, are the authors of the inspiring True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership. From Amazon: "This book offers a practical, inspiring examination of the executive experience and a guide to locating what the authors call ‘the internal compass that guides you successfully through life.’

"At the heart of True North is a series of interviews with 125 managers. They also get interviewees to talk about failures, emotional challenges, personal tragedies, regrets—in short, life events that knocked them off typical career paths.Taken together, the stories illustrate True North’s thesis: that there is no single way to become an ideal leader."

3. My friends in New York have a revolutionary CD for all you jetlagged Divas: Until Tomorrow. This gentle guide for a good night’s sleep is the perfect travel companion. Not only does it address the problems of sleeplessness through Progressive Relaxation, but it also addresses wakefulness and feeling prepared for the day the next morning. Let Juhi Singh, trained holistic and Oriental medicine practioner, soothe your troubles—and the miles—away!

4. Jeffrey Feldman, author, Framing the Debate: Famous Presidential Speeches and How Progressives Can Use Them to Change the Conversation. Author, philosopher, PhD-holder and blogger extraordinaire (and also super cute), Jeffrey puts his passion where his Frameshop is at www.frameshopisopen.com.

5. Don Cheadle and John Prendergast, authors, Not On Our Watch: The Mission To End Genocide In Darfur And Beyond. With a foreword by Elie Wiesel and an introduction by Senators Barack Obama and Sam Brownback, and presented in San Francisco in conjunction with the education group, Facing History and Ourselves, this unique and visionary awareness-raising campaign is huge! Bravo, boys!!

Celebrate Cinco De Mayo in Cancun

It’s my favorite time of year and here are my insider tips for my favorite place in the world - Cancun and the Mayan Riviera a.k.a. "The Mexiteranian."

Just south of the Rio Grande lies a country wrapped in Aztecs and Mayan mysteries, jungles filled with jaguars and butterflies, and warm white beaches with silky blue waters. Thousands of years ago the proud Indian warriors built breathtaking edifices that scraped the heavens and could tell time. A country with deep European roots, Mexico is a magical destination where you can get lost down Spanish cobblestone streets, swim in tropical azul waters, or sip martinis at your 5-star hotel on the Mayan Riviera. When it comes to the perfect destination, Cacun and the Yucatan has something for everyone.

Mayan Riviera Cultural Attractions:

Equinox at the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen-Itza
March and September (depends on the year)

This magical bi-yearly event attracts visitors from all over the globe and is truly the most dramatic display of Mayan astronomical knowledge encoded into architecture of any Mayan site yet discovered. On the days of the spring equinox, the edge of the sun’s shadow falls perfectly in line with the corner of the Kukulkan pyramid at Chichen-Itza, leaving one side in total sunlight and the other in total shadow. Additionally, a shadow running down the north staircase takes the form of a snake–hence the Mayan name, Kukulkan, the plumed serpent god.

Day of the Dead – Playa Del Carmen
October 31 – November 2

This is a colorful 2-day celebration that is anything but scary. The Mexican love to honor their relatives who have passed -  and do so with grand parties in the local cemeteries. Everyone is welcome and it is a entertaining sight to see kids running around, playing with skeleton toys and eating skeleton candies – much like Halloween. The party continues until November 2, where the town congregates at the shopping center of Playa Del Carmen with lots of music and food.
